Jimmie Varnado presided over his first meeting as Alabama Board of Rehabilitation Services chairman April 17.
“I’ve been a part of this board for a long time,” said Varnado, who represents congressional district 2. “Over that time, it’s given me great pleasure to give back and to support and represent both business and the disability community. This department is a dedicated group of individuals with great leadership, and I enjoy being here because you can see all of the positive results of this department’s hard work. Serving as board chair is a true honor for me.”
ADRS Commissioner Cary F. Boswell said he is pleased to see Varnado assume the chairmanship.
“Mr. Varnado is a man of 100 percent integrity,” said Boswell. “He is a man who is engaged in what he does and takes his responsibilities very seriously. He is organized and structured and will run our board meetings efficiently and with the best interest of our department in mind.”
Mr. Varnado, who retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 2000, is active in his community and has been honored for volunteer service by Junior League of Montgomery, Outreach Ministry, and the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Varnado has served as board member of the Central Montgomery Optimist Club, board member and treasurer of the River Region United Way, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, and as vice president of Leadership Montgomery.
Varnado has been on the board since 2007. He will serve a two-year term as board chairman of the Alabama Board of Rehabilitation Services.
